10 Feet is a fragmented, poetic drama following Robert Jones, a homeless man living beneath Park Lane in an underpass that becomes both his physical shelter and the architecture of his fractured mind. The ten feet of concrete surrounding him becomes at once a prison, a grave, a football box, a body, a repository of memory and a threshold between one state of being and another.
Moving between the present and broken memories of football, prison, marriage and violence, Robert struggles to piece together the events that led him underground. At the centre of the play lies the unresolved death of his wife and the question of Robert’s involvement — a truth obscured by guilt, grief, denial and hallucination.
Memories of a brutal football coach echo throughout his life, where lessons in aggression, fearlessness and survival have shaped his understanding of masculinity, ambition and violence. As voices from his past and present begin to close in on him, the tunnel becomes a kind of courtroom in which Robert is forced to confront the person he has become.
Using football as a recurring metaphor for survival, failure and salvation, 10 Feet explores homelessness, identity, mental illness, addiction, race and the destructive consequences of living by the rules of aggression. As the drama moves towards images of death, drowning, rebirth and possible freedom, Robert longs to escape the concrete body of his past. Yet the ending remains deliberately uncertain: he may be confessing, hallucinating, dying, transforming, or finally seeing himself clearly.
At its core, 10 Feet is about a man trapped inside the story he has built in order to survive — and the cost of disappearing so completely within it.
